John & Simon’s Story

John and Simon laughing together

It is one of the most pleasurable and rewarding things I do in my week.

Simon is a volunteer with the Impetus Neighbourhood Care Scheme (NCS). Here are a few words he wrote about his visits to his scheme member, John:

I visit John, who is in his late 80s, once a week for an hour or so. He always looks delighted to see me when he opens the door. We sit and talk about the past and the present, about sport, history, his family, painting, and if the weather is good we may go out for a walk. When I leave he stands at the door and waves to me until I’m out of sight. It is one of the most pleasurable and rewarding things I do in my week.

John, who is widowed, says he enjoys having a cheerful, friendly person to talk to who is visiting him regularly. John’s family have also noticed a huge improvement to John’s general mood since Simon has been visiting.
