Interact provides one to one advocacy and support for people with learning disabilities who have a particular issue that requires resolving. We provide support in Child Protection cases, where one or both parents has a learning disability as well as a range of other issues.
Case Study
Emma has a learning disability. Emma's two children had been taken from her and put up for adoption. Social Services wanted to take her third child into care as soon as it was born. Emma had very low literacy ability at this time and was unable to read words of any more than 3 letters. Interact supported Emma through the court process by attending hearings and organising paperwork. We also introduced Emma to specialist organisations, parent support groups and literacy courses. She attended training sessions at Interact to increase her skills in speaking up for herself and in parenting. Following this, the courts decided that Emma's children should be returned to her.
