Impetus is the award-winning Brighton and Hove charity that helps vulnerable people who are lonely or isolated because of disability, poor mental or physical health or age. We help people make connections in their community through our life changing services and large network of trained volunteers.
Why this issue?
Loneliness can be devastating at any time of the year but especially in the lead up to Christmas when so many are planning to be with loved ones. This Christmas:
44,294 people will be on their own in Brighton and Hove
70% of people we help tell us isolation is the most difficult aspect of their life
Research shows that loneliness and isolation makes someone more prone to depression and can be as damaging to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day
What are we doing about it?
We are campaigning to raise awareness of the number of people lonely in our city and encourage people to take action – donate to support our work year round to tackle isolation and loneliness; be a good neighbour to someone on their own; or volunteer with us to help someone affected. We are an award winning local charity that provides befriending, advocacy and other critical services. We match local volunteers and isolated people to provide company, friendship and ensure there is someone to look out for some of our city’s most vulnerable. Every year, we support nearly 1,000 people across Brighton and Hove with our team of over 300 volunteers.
How can you help?
Donate – Give whatever amount you can and help us ensure no one has to be lonely. It costs us just £10.35 to provide weekly befriending support for one isolated person. Your money will be spent directly helping those in need: in recruiting and training our volunteers and matching them with isolated people and providing support to help individuals access information and services to improve their lives.
Fundraise for us – Get your friends together, put on an event, do something silly for sponsorship; every penny really does count.
Spread the word – Help us make the campaign come alive by championing us on social media and in your own networks. The more people that know about us, the greater impact we will have – get liking and sharing!
