We are delighted to report that Jack Taylor, a young person with Asperger Syndrome, has been awarded the City Achiever 2009 Award from City College Brighton and Hove where he studies Motor Vehicle Maintenance. Jack has been part of`ASpire for several years and is always smiling and always keen to get involved in activties and groups. More details of his award can be found here. Congratulations to Jack for all his hard work and efforts. Book Review Asperger's Syndrome: The Essential Guide This book is a guide on Asperger’s Syndrome and is aimed at those who have the condition, parents and professionals. There are ten chapters that explore a variety of topics, including diagnosis, children with AS, adults with AS, counselling, relationships as well as research on current findings on the condition. The essence of the book is one of offering information about the subject matter as well as support strategies for all those involved with the condition. I particularly like the straightforward tables that offer advice and suggestions on training, work, social skills and relationships. Headings include ‘what to ask yourself’, ‘possible answer’ and ‘points to consider’. Whilst this is by no means the only book in its field, ‘Asperger’s Syndrome: The Essential Guide’ captures the essence of Asperger’s in bite-sized, digestible sections. Its language and content is accessible both to neuro-typical people as well as those with AS. Each chapter is fairly short and succinct; bullet points help to capture ideas and strategies and each chapter finishes with a short summary. The end of the book includes a ‘Help List’, a ‘Book List’ and a glossary of terms. This is an invaluable resource for those who are affected by AS, particularly as support in this field is very limited. The author is well placed to write such a book – her husband, one of her children and other family members are affected by AS. Her attitude towards AS is a positivist one. This I feel, will help to inspire and inform anyone who chooses to read it. This is a practical book that can be dipped into and revisited – one which is current, informed and immensely helpful/hugely useful. I thoroughly recommend it. Su Orosa, ASpire Project Leader.
